Picasso Museum

Pablo Picasso is considered as one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. His canvases are in the world famous museums. His talent and lots of new ideas have contributed to changing attitudes of former art and modernity has introduced a new concept in art, which means a victory of form over the content.

With the development of modernism, Barcelona became a major center of intellectual, political and cultural activities in Spain. Internationally recognized artists including Picasso, Miro, Dali and the famous architect Gaudi gave their imprints to Barcelona and so Catalan culture flourished.

City of Inspiration

Picasso drew his first inspiration in Barcelona, where he spent ten years. This Mediterranean city full of light and positive energy was host to many avant-garde Spanish artists. They exchanged ideas between themselves and hence created the conditions for breaking with the traditional view of the world. One of the most important movements that developed between 1905 and 1914 is certainly cubism. The main pillar of this movement was collaboration between Picasso and French painter George. In addition to painting, Picasso worked on sculptures, ceramics and designing costumes for plays.

Picasso Museum

Picasso Museum in Barcelona is the largest and most complete museum in the world that is dedicated to a single artist. The permanent exhibition includes around 3,500 of his works. Among them are drawings, sketches, oils, sculptures and particularly interesting, the rooms with exposed ceramic works. There is also a whole series of studies of the famous "Las Meninas”.

This is the most visited museum in Barcelona. Every year there are about million visitors. The museum is located in a patrician palace Berenguer de Aguilar in the picturesque part of the town - La Ribera. The museum opened in 1963 with a collection of paintings donated by Jaume Sabater, Picasso’s friend.

The permanent exhibition is presented in an interesting way because he invented a kind of Time Machine through Picasso’s life, from birth in the Andalusian city of Malaga until his death in France in 1973. It also has periods that are clearly defined in his work. Each period is specific in its way.

"Blue Period" (1901-1904) is characterized by shades of blue - the motives of prostitutes, beggars and dark mood while the "pink period" (1905-1907) is dominated by livelier tones, with pink and orange hues and themes and characters from the circus.

From 1907 till 1909 Picasso worked on artifacts of African culture inspired by African art, particularly masks.

The last period was Cubism (analytic and synthetic), the direction which Picasso developed in reducing the form to basic geometric shapes and colors that are monochrome pictures in the background.

A very interesting walk "Picasso’s trace through Barcelona" is organized along with visiting the museum. During this walk you can see the main places that Picasso loved.

La Sagradia Familia

La Sagradia Familia is an amazing cathedral close to the center of Barcelona. Its name means holy family.

The idea for the construction of this monumental cathedral came in 1866. Barcelona’s bookseller Josep María Bocabella had purchased 12,800 square feet close to the center of the city. This huge task was entrusted to the architect Francesc del Villar. The work began in August 1882. However, the architect Villar soon left the project due to disagreements with his colleague Juan Martorell Montells, an architect who was consultant Bokabella’s patron. Martorell suggested that work should continue with 31-year-old Antonio Gaudi.

Gaudi’s fifteen years of work on the church

Gaudi undertook the work until the last days of his life. On 7th June 1926, he was run down in the street by tram line number 30. After a three-day fight for life, he died. He was buried on the 12th June 1926. The procession passed through the city and citizens paid homage to the great architect, who was buried in a crypt of his unfinished masterpiece Sagradia Familia.
During his lifetime, Gaudi was able to complete only one of 18 towers. The cathedral is recognizable and visible from many parts of the city, especially when the plane comes from the sea and flies over the Olympic Harbor.

Architectural wonder

Although it is full of religious symbols and it reflects the birth, life and death of Jesus Christ, the Sagradia Familia is often seen as an architectural wonder. It is easily recognized as Gaudi’s great ornate style, with towers whose height ranges from 98 meters for "12 Apostles" to 170 meters dedicated to Christ. These towers leave no one indifferent.

During the Spanish Civil War, Gaudi’s work shop was destroyed. Many architectural geniuses have found this church a difficult riddle since the great master operated by his own imagination and intuition. He mostly worked with the help of some sketches.

Since 1980, the works are managed by the architect Jordi Bonet while Josep Subirachs takes care of facades.

The differences between old and new parts are evident at first glance. New stones are incredibly white while the old parts are covered with gray patina of time that has lasted for more than a century ... If there is money (donations) and if new technologies get involved, it is expected that the building of Sagradia Familia would be completed around 2025.

Magic SQUARE

On the facade known as the Passion of Christ is the "magic square". This is a combination of numbers that no matter how you watch them; horizontally, vertically or diagonally provide a sum of 33, the number that presents Christ’s age at the time of his martyrdom.

Mezquita Cordoba

History

Mezquita Cordoba is a beautiful cathedral situated in Cordoba and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Spain. Its official name is the Cathedral of Saint Mary, but once upon a time it was a mosque. In its place was an old temple from the Roman period and later on a cathedral built by the Visigoths. Construction of the Mezquita was started in the 8th century by an Arab ruler, Emir Abd ar-Rahman I. At first, the mosque had another name - it was dedicated to his wife and took her name - Aljama. The successors of the Emir added something new to the mosque. Abd ar-Rahman III built another minaret, Al-Hakam II added new structures to the mosque and at the end of the 10th century, Al-Mansur built a new courtyard and the outer nave. When Cordoba fell into Christian hands again in the 13th century, the mosque was reconverted into a Christian cathedral. Alfonso X built two chapels - the Villaviciosa and the Royal Chapel and Charles V added a Renaissance cathedral into the structure. A long time passed till another Muslim prayed in the Mezquita again - it was in 1931 when a Muslim doctor prayed for the first time since the Muslims left Spain. Today this magnificent building is under the protection of the UNESCO World Heritage.

Islamic influence

The Mezquita and Alhambra in Granada are the best examples of Islamic Art in Spain. The Mezquita has massive arches made of jasper and other precious materials. These columns were originally taken away from the temple that the Romans built and from the Visigothic cathedral which previously stood on the site. The most important vestibule of the said mosque served for coaching and managing commandments and peace inside Al-Andalus for the duration of the Arab rule. This rectangular building has walls with Quranic captions inscribed on their surface. It also has a wide open and gaping court, windows made of colored glass, beautiful mosaics and lovely minarets. In architectural style, the Mezquita is comparable to the Mosque of Damascus in many aspects. In front of the mosque there is a lovely garden with oranges and beautiful fountains.

Christian influence

The Royal Chapel of Alfonso X is maybe the best example of Christian influence on the building. Inside the chapel, visitors can see two pulpits designed by Michel de Verdiguier and fascinating choir stalls by Pedro Duque Cornejo made in Baroque style. There are also a beautiful altar curtain from the 16th century and a Baroque Christ in marble. In front of the chapel, magnificent Baroque tower surrounding the Muslim minaret and the Pardoners gate are some of the most beautiful examples of the Christian influence. Even after the mosque became a cathedral, because of its dazzling beauty, Christian rulers kept almost all of its Islamic characteristics and just added their own seal.

Caceres

Short history of Caceres

Caceres is the capital city of the province of the same name in Spain. This is one of the most beautiful regions in Spain with many historical sites, rural towns and beautiful nature. City of Caceres came under the protection of UNESCO in 1986. This is the place where many famous historic battles took place and people who lived there left a lot of their heritage. All around the city the Roman, Islamic and Gothic remains are still visible. The first evidence of human settlement in this region is from the Paleolithic era. When the Romans occupied the city in 25 BC, Caceres became an important strategic city in the Roman Empire. Before the Arabs conquered the city in the 7th century, Barbarians and Visigoths demolished it. In the 13th century, Caceres became a Christian city again, and at that time it had a significant population of Jews. After the Discovery of America, many families from Caceres gained fortune in the New World. The city, famous for its wealth, became the capital of the Extremadura province.

What to visit

Caceres has many historical quarters where visitors can see old buildings, palaces, churches and towers. At the entrance of the city is a magnificent gate - Arco de la Estrella. The gate was built in the 18th century in order to replace the previous one from the medieval period. Passing the entrance, people can see the Plaza de Santa Maria - a medieval square surrounded with beautiful palaces. Built between the 15th and 16th centuries, the Carvajal palace is one of the most magnificent in the city. It has a lovely courtyard with a thousand-year-old tree. The biggest palace in the city is the Mayoralgo Palace. Built in the 16th century, it has a big courtyard and the Episcopal Palace. A Gothic cathedral - Santa Maria Pro is situated nearby. This three naves building has many things to show: beautiful main altar, many sculptures and tombstones. Here is a famous image of "Black Christ". The story says that all those who looked at the picture died. If you "survive" the Black Christ image, visit the San Mateo church from the 15th century, Church of Santiago, city walls and other numerous palaces.

Cuisine

Caceres is famous for its domestic sweets and pastries. Also, tasty red wine and ham are well known products of this region. They still make cheese by traditional methods. Do not miss trying pork or lamb in Caceres or some of the liquors such as cherry, chestnut or blackberry liquor. Many of these products are officially recognized by the Spanish government and are exported abroad.

Cantabria has important artistic legacy as well. The main sights in this region are: the caves of Altamira, Romanesque cathedrals and beautiful towns like Santillana del Mar. The capital of Cantabria is Santander.

Places to visit

Places to visit in Asturias and Cantabria are countless. One of the most popular tourist attractions are the Alatamira Caves situated in Cantabria. These caves have a hidden treasure - the paintings of our prehistoric ancestors. It was at the end of the 19th century when these paintings were discovered for the first time. Some doubted if they were originals, but after confirmation of their authenticity, tourists started to visit the site. The paintings display the images of bisons and rarely of other animals (horses and deers) and they are painted mostly in red and black color. The original caves were closed to visitors in 1977 in order to preserve the paintings. A replica of the caves has been made and today only few visitors have the opportunity to visit the real caves.

Near Santander is a small town called Comillas. This town is another lovely place to visit in the region. Situated at the coast, the town has narrow streets, sandy beaches and several wide squares. Many Spanish citizens who went to America came back and settled here, bringing Modernism to Spain. The most famous building in the town is the El Capricho, originally designed by Gaudi. Today, this building is a restaurant with a lovely garden. Also worth a visit is the Pontifical University, a large building, a mix of different styles. Another interesting port town in this area is Gijon. Once a village, this town is a big industrial center today. But it still holds its authenticity from the 17th and 18th centuries. In Gijon, visit Revillagigedo - magnificent palace from the 18th century. Also, visit the cathedral of San Juan Bautista and the University in Gijon.

One of the most beautiful villages is Mogrovejo, situated on the Picos de Europa. This lovely village has historical remains from the 16th century.

There are many other places that should be seen in Asturias and Cantabria. Some of the sites are under the protection of the UNESCO World Heritage.

Spain - Gijon

History

Gijon is an industrial city situated on the coast of Asturias in Spain. The town itself has a long history. The oldest material remains are in the form of human settlements that go back to pre-history. As the Roman Empire spread, the town became a part of it. In the 7th century it was attacked by the Visigoth tribes and later on by the Arabs. Apart from southern and central Spain, Gijon kept its independence and remained free. During the 11th century, many monasteries and churches were built as a result of the strong Christian influence in the town. In the 14th century Gijon was the scene of a battle. Rebellions against the crown were under a siege lasting several months, when most parts of the town were destroyed and many locals lost their lives. Gijon disappeared from history. In the 17th century building of the fortification around the city started. At that time the first monumental buildings were also built in the town. In the 18th century, the town started to trade with South America. After the industrial revolution in the 19th century, the golden age for Gijon started.

Things to see

Gijon has lot of buildings and museums worth visiting. Universidad Laboral is a building built in the 20th century situated few kilometers from the city center. It was designed to be an orphanage. This enormous building has eight and a half thousand square meters of space and a theatre for fifteen hundred people. From its 117 meter high balcony tower, visitors can see a magnificent view of the town. Campo Valdes Roman Baths is another attraction of Gijon. Because of its huge popularity, it is not surprising to see queues outside. This is a museum that displays models and films of the Roman baths. Campa Torres Archaeological Park is an area where the visitors can see the remains of a pre Roman fortification. In the park there is also an exhibition of the ancient pottery excavated near the fortification.

Beaches and parks

Gijon has two big city beaches. Near the first smaller beach is situated the city marina. It has its own parking places and a railway museum nearby. The second city beach is known as the Beach of San Lorenzo. This is a very large, sandy beach with a path. It offers a number of facilities for the tourists: car parking places, a tourist office and the beautiful gardens around. The city has a large park on the hill above it - the Cerro de Santa Catalina. Castile and León

About Castile and León

Castile and León is also called Castilla y León in Spanish language. It was built in 1978 binding the Old Castile and León and it was also a pre-autonomous region. Then later, in 1983 it evolved to an autonomous community. It covers approximately 95 thousand square kilometers of Spain and has a population of 2.5 million people.

Most of the Castile and León region is covered by mountains. Furthermore, it is elevated at 800m above sea level. The region consists of hilly peaks covered in portions of clay soil.

This region also has several rivers. Douro is the longest and it runs about 900 kilometers from its headwaters located near Picos de Urbión to the Portuguese city called Oporto. This river flows through a canyon in the famous Natural Park Arribes del Duero where it forms a geographical border with Portugal continuing to flow north.

Extraordinary climate

Besides rivers, this area consists of reservoirs, lakes and lagoons. The famous lagoon is Laguna Negra near the Picos de Urbión and there is Laguna Grande in Gredos. Despite very little rainfall, this area has the largest amount of water in reserve in the whole country. The climate in Castile and León is continental Mediterranean. As interesting as this is, it varies from region to region within the area. Therefore the whole area around Castile and León experiences specific climate from Atlantic Ocean. On one side, the central region has typical Mediterranean temperatures and mild winds whereas the northeast and east sections have Mediterranean mountain climate that has a lot of rain and hot summers with harsh winters.

Made of nine provinces

It is very important to say that Castile and León has 9 territories: Burgos, Avila, Zamora, León, Salamanca, Palencia, Segovia, Soria and Valladolid. Every territory has got its name from its own capital. Besides the fact that it has its own autonomy, it does not have any capital, therefore its capital is Valladolid. This city is the social and economical center of the region. The jurisdiction center is located in Burgos, although some other important government bodies can be found in Zamora as well.

Moreover, Junta de Castilla which is roughly translated as "Council" presents the executive center of Castille and Leon.

The area of Castile and León is very famous for its cuisine, national parks and decorative habitudes. From wonderful landscapes to Rocky Mountains, this might be your choice of vacation.

Spain - Astorga

History

Astorga is a small town in northern Spain. It has 12,100 inhabitants. Celtic tribes first settled in this place and the Romans came in 14 BC. Astorga was a very important city for the Romans and it was called "magnificent city". In the 8th century it was conquered by Spanish ruler Alfonso I of Asturias, but from the 11th century it was the most important point for the French pilgrims on their way to Saint Jacob's tomb in Compostela. During the Peninsular War (between France and the allied powers of Spain, the United Kingdom and Portugal in the 19th century), it was a settlement for Napoleon's troops.

Main sights

The Cathedral of Astorga was built in the 16th century. It was originally designed in Gothic style, but after many reconstructions now it has the elements from later styles: Neo-Classicist period, Baroque and Renaissance. The Cathedral is well known for its famous sculptures, majority of them made by Gaspar Becerra in the 16th century. These sculptures are considered as masterpieces of the Spanish Renaissance sculptures. On its doorways visitors can see scenes from the Bible. The cathedral also has two towers built in the 17th century. The interior of the cathedral is magnificent. It has a fascinating altar, designed by Gaspar de Hoyos. Moreover, its choir-stalls are well decorated. Most of the cathedral treasury is displayed in the Diocesan Museum. Apart from the Roman baths, visitors can see the remains of the walls, forum, several mosaics and the Ergastula Romana. This underground room is thought to be a Roman prison for the slaves. The Episcopal Palace is another important building in Astorga, designed by
well-known Catalan architect Antonio Gaudi. The Palace was built between 1889 and 1913, when the previous Episcopal residence was destroyed in a fire. Gaudi had the idea to harmonize this Palace with its surroundings, so it was built in a neo-medieval style. It has four towers and a ditch around it. Another important building is the Town Hall, built in the 18th century. This Baroque structure has two towers and a famous clock with two figures that show the exact time.

Accommodation

Astorga has many villas with very comfortable rooms. Some villas are in the center of the town. There are taverns that offer large variety of domestic and international meals. The visitors will have a magnificent view of the city clock, beautiful cathedral and Gaudi's building. There are many bars and restaurants all over the city and several night clubs for nights to remember.

Alcalá de Henares

Alcalá de Henares is located a few miles north of Madrid. It is a city of great importance in the history of Spain.

Alcalá is the place where Miguel de Cervantes was born. Furthermore, it is under the protection of UNESCO.

Its existence is closely related to its university, which was founded in 1499 by Cardinal Cisneros. This city has interesting memories of the past.

Today Alcalá de Henares has about 170,000 citizens. It is a remarkable city about twenty miles from Madrid and well connected with Zaragoza by highway.

History of the city

This is the old Complutum Roman fortified town. However, it was conquered by the Arabs later. Many civilizations dominated over the town and they left important traces in the history of the city. On the other hand, numerous conquerors made this city worthy as a   tourist reserve. They contributed to its rich archaeological and historical heritage.

In the late fifteenth century, Cardinal Cisneros established the Universidad Complutense. This university is the first planned University City in the world.

The powerful Cardinal Cisneros was a regent of the Catholic Kings. He was also the driving force in Alcalá and he made the Polyglot Bible and the first Gramática Castellana.
After a brilliant period, Alcalá was in crisis and in the nineteenth century, it moved its famous university to Madrid.

It was also the home and host city of many important people in the culture of Spain like Francisco de Quevedo, Lope de Vega, etc.

City Attractions

Some of these monuments are: the Oratory of St. Philip Neri, Hospital de Antezana, Cervantes Museum-house, the remains of Santa Maria Maggiore and Magistrate Chapel, home of the interview, walls, etc.

In recent years there has been more restoration of some old houses. On the other hand some buildings of deep historical flavor have been restored as well.
With all this, simply walk through the streets of the old city of Alcalá and you will enjoy the ancient spirit.

The quality of the buildings of the Golden Age, the great university and being the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes enabled UNESCO to declare Alcala as a World Heritage City in 1998. This city with its university and Miguel de Cervantes made great achievements in the fields of linguistics. Moreover, the city has deep significance for humankind due to the global intellectual development that started here in the 15th century.

Tossa de Mar

Tossa De Mar is a flower of Costa Brava

Tossa de Mar is a town and municipality on the northeast coast of Spain called Costa Brava. Situated just 100 km from the French border, this town is part of the autonomous community of Catalonia.

Tossa de Mar is perhaps less popular than nearby Lloret de Mar, but is definitely worth visiting. The town is fortified; it is surrounded by walls that date from the 12th century. The biggest part of the walls is preserved, but from 5 towers, only three have remained- one collapsed due to aging and the other one was destroyed due to the construction of the lighthouse at the beginning of the 20th century.

The remaining towers are the Entrance Tower, the Homage Tower and the Jonas Tower. The town located within the walls is popularly known as "Vila Vella" (which means “the old town”).

Villa Nuova and Villa Vela- the history of Tossa De Mar

The area of Tossa de Mar has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. Until the end of the 20th century, the origin of this town was unknown. However, the ruins of the Roman city were found under the town, so most likely, the Romans were the founders of Tossa de Mar.

The town was established in the 12th century and that is when the castle was built. Later, it was replaced by a windmill and at the end, replaced by the lighthouse.

Tossa de Mar is a medieval town full of narrow cobbled streets and houses made of stone. Interior of the city itself is composed of a lot of flowers on balconies, labyrinths, Plazas (squares in Spanish) and old historic buildings.

Villa Nuova, which means “the new town”, is the modernistic, regulated area full of restaurants where you can try delicious domestic Catalan cuisine; here you will find plenty of shops, cafes and great nightlife. However, the new part of town does not have many hotels and high-rise buildings because of the law.

Tossa De Mar has a Mediterranean climate

Most tourists come in August and perhaps June or July is the best time to visit Tossa de Mar. September is too windy.

Tossa de Mar has three beaches. The main beach "The Tossa Beach” is located near the city center, across the walls. The beach is about 380 meters long.

In the end, Tossa de Mar managed to maintain peace and it is the right place for resting

In Tossa de Mar, the sea is deep blue colored, the coast is quite rocky (meaning of Costa Brava is a rough or wild coast) and it is very exciting to practice scuba diving here due to natural surroundings.

Tossa de Mar has been a fishing town throughout history. Today, it has not changed very much. Fishermen leave their boats on the smallest beach-El Codolar (located behind the walls) over the winter. Third beach is May Menuda and it is about 200 m wide and located on the other side of the bay.

Nowadays, the economy is based on tourism. Since the mid of the 20th century, Tossa de Mar has become a popular tourist place.  Every year, a lot of tourists come here to visit the Costa Brava’s flower.
